The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation into the funeral industry, whose findings were published last summer, has announced it’s latest action to help bereaved families.
Under the rules announced on Wednesday, from 16 September all funeral directors must display a standard price list at all premises and on any website that includes the headline price of a funeral, making clear which individual items are included as well as the cost of additional products and services.
Does this all sound too familiar?
The legally enforceable rules are being brought in after a funeral industry investigation by the competition watchdog found UK consumers were typically being overcharged by at least £400 – and possibly a lot more – when they paid for a funeral.
The CMA found that the two largest firms in the UK sector, Co-op and Dignity, were often significantly more expensive than many of the small, typically family-owned businesses that operate in the UK. This is similar to research conducted in Australia with the two largest corporate firms in Australia, InvoCare and Propel Funeral Partners also found to be more expensive to smaller independent funeral homes.
The findings from the CMA investigation has similar parallels to the Australian marketplace and is likely to have major flow on effects in the way the industry operates here.
Given the ongoing investigation into the industry by Australia’s consumer watchdog, the ACCC, and other recent inquires conducted in New South Wales and Queensland, it is likely that funeral operators will be under notice that similar rules may apply.
