Cremation is the new black for the death care industry, with more Australian’s choosing the option of cremation instead of burial.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 160,000 people will die in Australia this year, around one person every 3 minutes. For each death, about 70 per cent of people, responsible for organising the funeral, will choose a cremation. The figure is about 56 per cent in non-urban areas.
So why has the popularity of cremation grown so much in recent years?

People don’t stay in the same place
In decades past, generations of one family would all be buried in the same cemetery. Today, it is common for families to spread out and move more frequently, causing fewer people to want to be buried in the same location where they live.
Large religious groups have accepted the practice
For some religions, cremation used to be taboo. In 1963, the Vatican allowed cremation for members of the Catholic church as long as their ashes are not scattered. As cremation becomes a more mainstream practice, the religious stigma associated with cremation is expected to become less prominent.
Cremation is simple
Cremation is a cost-effective, flexible, and a more personalised way to honour a life lived. It can be as straightforward or as elaborate as you want it to be. Unlike a traditional funeral service, you don’t have to go for all the bells and whistles, unless you want to. There’s no need for an expensive coffin, a chapel service, pallbearers, or a funeral hearse. You don’t even need to buy an urn if you don’t want to.
Cremation is flexible
Cremation offers you the gift of time. Where a traditional service requires things to move along at a brisk pace, cremated remains can be kept until you’ve decided on a scattering, burial, or memorial site. Cremation allows families the time to travel in order to be together, taking away the stress of planning a service in the days following a death. There’s enough emotion and confusion during this difficult time- why make it any harder than it has to be?
You don’t even have to be present
A ‘no fuss’ or what is commonly referred to as ‘direct cremation’ is becoming more popular and the cheapest and simplest type of funeral. It involves collection of the body, and carrying out the cremation by a funeral director, (usually with no one present), and return the ashes to the family afterwards.
